National Apprenticeship Week 2026 kicked off last week, and across University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, we embraced the opportunity to celebrate skills, learning and the vital development of our future workforce. Throughout the week, our Apprenticeship and T Level teams delivered a packed programme of activity aimed at raising awareness, sharing opportunities, and recognising the incredible contribution apprentices and students make every day across the Trust.

Strong Start and New Talent Welcomed

The week began with great energy as the team hosted an information stand outside the Level 7 restaurant. Staff and visitors alike stopped by to learn more about the wide range of apprenticeships available at UHP, sparking plenty of positive conversations about career pathways and progression.

We were also delighted to welcome our newest cohort of T Level students. Their welcome event gave them the perfect introduction to the Trust ahead of starting their week-long clinical skills training. The enthusiasm and curiosity they brought with them set the tone for the week, and it was fantastic to support them as they took their first steps into a healthcare environment.

Supporting Our Community: Employer Engagement

On Tuesday, the team extended their outreach beyond the hospital walls. The team represented UHP at Torpoint Community College’s Employer Awareness event, speaking to Year 8 students about the value of apprenticeships as an alternative route into employment. Engaging young people early is an essential part of building future talent pipelines, and the session was a great opportunity to inspire the next generation.

Celebrating Apprenticeship Wednesday

Midweek, we shone a spotlight on the apprentices who help keep UHP moving. Apprenticeship Wednesday focused on recognising the value apprentices bring to our services, whether in digital, estates, healthcare support, administration or clinical roles.

This was also a day of celebration for individuals. We proudly presented Izzy with Apprentice of the Month, congratulating her on the commitment and talent she has demonstrated. We also recognised Caitlin for successfully completing her Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship, an achievement that reflects her hard work and dedication.

T Level Thursday

Thursday was dedicated to the growing impact of T Levels. These two‑year technical qualifications, equivalent to three A Levels, combine academic learning with substantial industry placements, and UHP is proud to play a key role in supporting local students on their journey into healthcare and business professions.

Since January 2024, we have hosted more than 50 students across Health, Healthcare Science, Business Administration and Digital pathways. Several of these students have since progressed into apprenticeships within the Trust, including Lily, whose success story has been an inspiration for others.

This year, we welcomed 10 new T Level Health students during NAW. Throughout the week, they immersed themselves in essential skills training to prepare for their placements later this month.

Celebration Friday – Apprentice of the Year

The week concluded with one of our biggest celebrations: announcing Matthew Lamerton as UHP’s Apprentice of the Year 2025. Matthew, who completed the Level 6 Chartered Manager Apprenticeship, has shown ongoing dedication, leadership and professionalism throughout his programme. This award recognises not only his achievements but also the positive impact he has made within his team.

National Apprenticeship Week 2026 showcased the strength, passion and potential of our apprentices, T Level students, and the dedicated teams who support them. Whether through drop‑ins, school engagement, recognition events or student inductions, the week demonstrated our ongoing commitment to developing talent and offering meaningful learning opportunities.
