We’re delighted to share the latest progress on the Plymouth Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), which has now reached a significant milestone. The scaffolding has come down, revealing the building’s striking new exterior. The front elevation showcases a modern brick façade, while the rear features an eye-catching patterned cladding system that gives the building its distinctive character.

Inside, work is moving at impressive pace. Up to 120 contractors are on site each day, completing the internal fit-out and installing the advanced diagnostic equipment that will bring the centre to life. The project remains firmly on programme, with construction due to finish in May and the first patients expected in June 2026.

The new CDC will significantly transform access to diagnostic testing for people across Plymouth and the wider peninsula. Located in Colin Campbell Court in the West End, it will not only enhance healthcare access but also play a key role in the ongoing regeneration of the city centre.

Its central position offers patients the added convenience of nearby shops, cafés and leisure facilities, along with easy parking at Western Approach Car Park.

Once open, the centre will support up to 330 patients every day, delivering around 91,600 imaging tests each year, alongside a wide range of other diagnostic procedures and adult audiology services. Recruitment is already underway for around 130 new colleagues who will be part of this exciting service.

Teams from Phlebotomy, Audiology, Imaging and Physiological Measurement have recently visited the site to walk through their future workspaces. Their expertise has been vital in shaping the building’s final design. Working closely with BAM Construction and our consultants, Ward Williams, they’ve helped ensure the layout and facilities support excellent patient experience and a positive working environment.

When fully operational, the centre will provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests, scans and checks all in one convenient location, including:

• Ultrasound
• X-ray
• Echocardiography (ECHO)
• Electrocardiogram (ECG)
• Vascular ultrasound
• Adult audiology
• Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
• FeNO and lung function tests
• Electroencephalography (EEG)
• Pacemaker clinic
• Simple field tests (e.g. six‑minute walk test)
• Spirometry, including bronchodilator response
• Sleep investigations

By moving these services away from the main hospital site and into a purpose-built facility, we will improve access and speed up diagnosis closer to home.
