You may be used to seeing Dr Beth Newstead as the Service Line Director for the Emergency Department, but Beth was also one of the first people in the UK to gain a qualification in Lifestyle Medicine…
Lifestyle Medicine is all about maintaining health rather than treating disease. It can help you make changes in all areas of your life (diet, exercise, sleep and stress/ anxiety management) in order to keep you as well as possible. Lifestyle medicine works alongside usual medical care. Beth is working on a pilot scheme with Christine Little, our Head of Wellbeing, to bring Lifestyle Medicine to UHP colleagues and complement our existing wellbeing offer.
Beth has first-hand experience in juggling work and family life. As a consultant in a consultant in Emergency Medicine with over 20 years’ experience, she led the Emergency Department through the COVID-19 pandemic and knows only too well how difficult it can be to make change and look after yourself.
Beth said: “Everyone has challenges in their life, and we often forget to prioritise ourselves, but I passionately believe that everyone can make positive changes to their health and wellbeing.
“NHS staff are vulnerable to stressors such as shift work, long hours and stressful working conditions. We are also notoriously bad at prioritising our own health. Lifestyle Medicine can help us to start looking after ourselves in an evidence-based and achievable way.”
